Properties of Clothing Material

The properties of clothes that determine how they can be comfortable and hold up to everyday wear and tear are called the different properties of clothing material. Some properties are more important than others, though. The most important of these is compression. When materials are compressed or stretched, they change the shape of the microscopic structure of the molecules in them. These changes can affect the way they will respond to weight or impact pressure.

An example of a material that has both compression and stretch is linen. The linen can stretch and conform easily to any size while maintaining its original shape. Knitted cloth is not this pretty flexible but is still reasonably close. On the other hand, Cotton is a material that is generally only suitable for use where weight is an issue and where the fabric is not likely to change shape once it is wet.

Heat absorption:

One of the fundamental properties of clothing is its properties of absorbing and transporting heat. When a clothing item is put on, the surface area increases, causing the material to absorb the heat before it has time to escape so that clothes can be kept longer in a heated room than in a cold one. However, clothes also maintain their cold temperature much longer if kept at a relatively cooler temperature.

Breathability is another important property. Many people think that clothes that do not breathe are very bad for one’s health. The truth, however, is that no material can breathe appropriately if it is kept wet.  So the breathability of clothing matters a lot. A material that does not allow the air to flow freely will suffocate with the accumulation of these microscopic particles.

Another essential property of clothing is softness. The quality of softness depends on the quality of the materials that make up the clothing. Softness can also be determined by the overall feel of a material, with some people feeling a certain way about a fabric versus another fabric. It’s this combination of texture and softness that makes up the softness of clothing material. These are some of the different main properties of fabric that are found. Different materials will have varying amounts of density, weight, stretchability, and durability. Many other things can change the properties that material has, but those are the four main ones that can be used. Materials like fibers, laces, and threading all have different properties, which can be helpful for particular items.
